Terms of use

Using it

You may use Yarn Diary for your own crochet projects, on as many of your devices as you like, at no cost. You do not need permission and there is nothing to sign.

Please do not use it to break the law, to infringe someone else's rights, or to attack the service or the people using it.

Your work is yours

Yarn Diary claims no ownership of anything you put into it. Your projects, notes and photos stay on your device, and if you enable sync they stay in your own Google Drive. No rights in your content are transferred by using the app.

Patterns and copyright

Yarn Diary can read a pattern from a photo or a PDF so you can follow it round by round. That is a convenience for patterns you already have the right to use — ones you bought, were given, or wrote yourself.

Crochet patterns are creative works, and most are copyrighted by their designers. Scanning a pattern into this app does not give you any rights in it that you did not already have. In particular, do not use Yarn Diary to copy, share or redistribute a pattern you do not have permission to pass on. Designers are usually one person doing careful work, and pattern sales are how they keep doing it.

You are responsible for having the right to use whatever you import.

Backups and data loss

Everything lives in your browser's storage. That storage can be cleared by you, by your browser's settings, by uninstalling the browser, or occasionally by the browser itself when the device runs short of space. Drive sync reduces the risk but does not eliminate it.

Export a backup from the Data screen from time to time. Yarn Diary cannot recover data that a device has discarded, because no copy of it exists anywhere else.

Pattern recognition is not proofreading

Reading a pattern from a photograph is imperfect. The app checks each round's arithmetic against the stitch count printed in the pattern and flags what does not add up, which catches most mistakes — but not all of them. The review list shown before saving is there to be read. Always trust the original pattern over what the app made of it.

Google account

Sync is optional. If you use it, your relationship with Google is your own and is governed by Google's Terms of Service. What Yarn Diary does with the access you grant is described in the Privacy page.

Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics for anonymous visit counts. Where the law asks for consent it is off until you give it, elsewhere you can switch it off with one tap, and a browser privacy signal is respected either way. The Privacy page has the details and the switch.

Availability

This is a hobby project. It may change, may go offline, and may stop being maintained, without notice. The app itself keeps working offline on a device where it is already installed, and your backup files remain readable regardless.

No warranty

Yarn Diary is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. It is not guaranteed to be uninterrupted, error-free, or to preserve your data.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the author of Yarn Diary is not liable for any damages arising from your use of it, including lost projects, lost photos, lost time, or any indirect or consequential loss. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case those exclusions apply only as far as the law permits, and nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Changes

These terms may change; the date at the top will change with them. Continuing to use the app after a change means the revised terms apply.
